Children's Dentistry

About Children’s Dentistry:

At Sunrise Dental Chatswood, our dentists are dedicated to the oral health of children — from infancy through the teenage years. With the right experience and gentle approach, we provide comprehensive care for children’s teeth, gums, and mouths at every stage of development.

Children typically begin developing baby teeth within the first 6 months of life, and by the age of 6 or 7, these are gradually replaced by permanent teeth. Without proper care, kids may face oral health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and early childhood caries.

Dental decay in children is one of the most common health issues, being 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever. Studies show that about 1 in 5 children aged 5 to 11 years has at least one untreated decayed tooth.

Our children’s dentistry in Chatswood services are focused on prevention, education, and gentle treatments to help kids build healthy dental habits for life.

General FAQs

When should my child have their first dental visit?

Your child should have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months after the first tooth appears. An early visit allows the dentist to check for any problems, monitor tooth development, and give parents guidance on brushing, diet, and healthy oral habits. Starting early helps prevent issues and makes dental visits a normal part of your child’s routine.

How often should children see the dentist?

Children should visit the dentist every six months, beginning by age one or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Regular checkups help track growth, prevent cavities, and build good oral habits. If your child has a higher risk of tooth decay or specific dental concerns, the dentist may recommend visits every three months for closer care.

How can I help my child prevent cavities?

You can help prevent cavities by making sure your child brushes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and starts flossing daily once their teeth touch. Keep their diet balanced and limit sugary snacks and drinks. Encourage them to drink fluoridated tap water, and schedule regular dental checkups. Your dentist may also recommend fluoride treatments or dental sealants for extra protection.

Are dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes, dental X-rays are safe for children because modern digital X-rays use very low radiation. Dentists only recommend them when needed and use protective measures like lead aprons and thyroid collars. The benefits of detecting problems early far outweigh the minimal risks.

What can I do if my child is scared of the dentist?

If your child is scared of the dentist, keep explanations simple and positive, and avoid using scary words. Reading children’s books about dental visits or role-playing “dentist” at home can make the experience feel more familiar. During the appointment, bring a comfort item, use praise and reassurance, and let the dental team know so they can use gentle techniques to help your child feel safe.
