Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

About Specialty Dentistry:

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is an Australian Government program designed to help families cover the cost of essential dental care for children. It supports early dental treatment and preventive care, helping kids maintain healthy teeth as they grow.

At Sunrise Dental Chatswood, we accept CDBS and make the process straightforward, so parents can focus on their child’s oral health without added stress.

What Is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

CDBS provides up to $1,158 per eligible child for basic dental services. This amount is available over a two-calendar-year period, starting from the year the first service is claimed.

The benefit is funded by Medicare and applies only to approved dental services provided by participating dental clinics.

Who Is Eligible for CDBS?

A child may be eligible if they:

  • Are 0–17 years old for at least one day in the calendar year
  • Are eligible for Medicare
  • Receive, or have a parent or guardian receiving, relevant Australian Government payments (such as Family Tax Benefit Part A)

Eligibility is assessed automatically by Services Australia, so families don’t need to apply separately.

How the CDBS Limit Works

The $1,158 cap is shared across a two-year period—not per visit or per year. Families can choose when and how to use the benefit based on their child’s dental needs.

Once the two-year period ends, any unused balance expires and cannot be carried forward.

What Dental Services Are Covered Under CDBS?

CDBS focuses on essential and preventive dental care. Covered services typically include:

  • Dental examinations and check-ups
  • Professional cleaning
  • Dental X-rays
  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Tooth extractions

These services are intended to treat common dental issues early and prevent more serious problems later.

What Is Not Covered by CDBS?

CDBS does not cover:

  • Orthodontic treatment (such as braces)
  • Cosmetic dental procedures
  • Dental services provided in a hospital setting

If a service isn’t covered, our team can explain alternative options before treatment begins.

How to Check Your Child’s CDBS Balance

You can check your child’s remaining CDBS balance at any time by:

  • Logging into myGov / Medicare online
  • Using the Medicare Express Plus App
  • Calling Medicare on 132 150

If you’re unsure, we can also help confirm eligibility and remaining balance during your appointment.

Using CDBS at Sunrise Dental Chatswood

We aim to make CDBS visits easy and comfortable for both children and parents. If your child is eligible:

  • Claims are processed electronically
  • Covered services are usually provided with no out-of-pocket cost
  • We explain what’s included before any treatment starts

Our team takes a gentle, patient-first approach, helping children feel relaxed and confident during their visit.

Why Early Dental Care Is Important for Children

Starting dental care early helps children:

  • Develop healthy oral habits
  • Prevent tooth decay and gum issues
  • Avoid dental pain and infection
  • Feel more comfortable visiting the dentist long-term

Even baby teeth play an important role in eating, speaking, and guiding adult teeth into position.
